Privacy policy

Updated By Spencer, editor

Counselworthy collects as little as it can. Reading the site needs no account. When you click through to a firm's website, we record the firm, the page and the time, with a scrambled version of your IP address that changes every day. We never sell personal information or share it with law firms.

When you read the site

You don't need an account, and we don't ask who you are. Our host, Cloudflare, handles each request to send you a page. That request includes your IP address and details about your browser, as it does on any website. Cloudflare also counts page views for us with its Web Analytics, which uses no cookies. Cloudflare's own privacy policy covers what it keeps.

If something on a page breaks, your browser sends a short error report to Sentry, which we use to find and fix bugs. It says what broke, on which page, and your browser type. It never includes cookies or anything you typed. Sentry works out a rough location, like the city, from your connection, and is set not to store your IP address.

We don't use advertising trackers, and we don't sell information about visitors.

When you click through to a firm's website

Links to a firm's website go through a Counselworthy redirect. When you use one, we record:

  • which firm, and which of our pages you clicked from
  • the time
  • whether the visit looked like a bot
  • a scrambled version of your IP address

We never store the IP address itself. We mix it with a secret code and the date, so we can count repeat clicks within one day without knowing who you are. The next day, the same visitor looks new.

The link also adds tags to the firm's web address, so the firm's own analytics shows the visit came from Counselworthy. Once you're on the firm's website, its privacy policy applies, not ours. We may tell a firm how many visits came from us. Never anything about one visitor.

When you compare firms

The firms you pick to compare are saved in your browser, so they're still there when you come back. They stay on your device. We never receive them. Clearing this site's data in your browser removes them.

Who handles data for us

  • Cloudflare hosts the site and counts page views.
  • Sentry receives error reports when something breaks.
  • Supabase stores the click records, in the United States.

They handle data only to run these services for us.

What we never do

  • Sell personal information.
  • Share it with law firms, or match anyone with a lawyer.
  • Take referral fees.

Children

Counselworthy isn't meant for children under 13, and we don't knowingly collect their information.
