Sources and how we counted

How we counted

  • Every crash FMCSA's Crash File lists for Jersey City from January 1, 2019 to December 31, 2025, read November 3, 2026. States send FMCSA each crash that involved a large truck or bus and killed someone, injured someone who was taken for medical treatment, or left a vehicle towed away. 2026 is left out while reports are still coming in.
  • A crash counts once, however many trucks or buses were in it. Companies, vehicle types and home states count each truck or bus.
  • People hurt are FMCSA's count of people injured and taken to a medical facility for immediate medical attention. People killed are its count of deaths, as police recorded them.
  • The town and road are the ones police wrote on the report. Spellings of one road count together, and a crash at a corner counts on both roads. Road counts aren't adjusted for traffic or road length.
  • A company is the one the crash report names, by its USDOT number. That says whose truck or bus was there, not who caused the crash. Big fleets drive more miles, so a higher count isn't a safety score. 283 of the 992 trucks and buses had no USDOT number on the report and count toward no company. A company is named only with 5 or more crashes, under a business name.
  • New Jersey's reports to FMCSA rarely say what a truck or bus hit, so this page doesn't count crashes with people on foot or on bikes.
  • Percents are rounded to whole numbers. A share of fewer than 20 crashes or vehicles isn't given. A time or road is called the most only when it leads the next by at least 10%.
  • General information, not legal advice. Crash numbers never change a law firm's score.
